If you have been following our posts you know our passion is teaching the many benefits of the Cane to Disabled Veterans, many that are wheelchair bound. We are fortunate to have this opportunity through the efforts of James Howards Veterans and Athletes United. Recently we have had the privilege and honor to work with a Veteran who lost her sight seven years ago, along with other blind young adults that come to support her. She is learning about all the health benefits plus the ability to use the cane for protection.
On the evening of June 24, 2026, we had the privilege of presenting the many ways a walking cane can be useful for both able-bodied veterans and wheelchair-bound veterans at James Howards VAU retreat. We demonstrated how the cane can help enhance quality of life by increasing flexibility, building strength, and supporting personal defense. Betty also spent time demonstrating the cane to two veterans who had lost their sight.
On 6/2/26, we had the opportunity to present our Cane Program to the Henrico TRIAD/SALT group. The first picture is the great group of seniors. Next is showing with a cane you always have the advantage of reach. Next showing how with a few resistance bands and your cane you have your own gym. The last picture is demonstrating how to use your cane to safely get up from the floor.
On 5/20/26 I had the honor and privilege to work with several Disabled Veterans at James Howard Veterans and Athletes United Veterans Retreat. Teaching that the cane is more than a crutch for able body Veterans and a very useful medical device for wheelchair bound veterans. The cane can be used to increase flexibility, increase blood flow and build strength. Even if you are wheelchair bound and have the use of one arm and hand you can use the cane to defend yourself if ever needed. For my wheelchair bound brother/sister Veterans I developed special training called “REACH CANE PROGRAM.” For this we use a shorter cane. If you truly want to survive you must train on all different kinds of terrain in all kinds of weather, especially with heavy winter clothes including boots and gloves. Remember the attacker will attack when it is convenient to them not you. Being prepared is being having good situational awareness. The best block is not to be there.
It was a pleasure to work with James Howard and his non profit Veterans and Athletes United
What a great honor it was to show Bob Hollinger and Misa that the Cane is way more than a crutch. Bob Hollinger is an internationally renowned defense expert and 8th degree Karate black belt holder and one of the best instructors in the nation. His daughter Misa is a force to be reckoned with and a 4th degree Karate black belt holder.
